Home of Abraham Lincoln, Springfield, Ill. Uncredited. CDV of Abraham Lincoln's house, elaborately decorated for the funeral with flags and foliage. In the foreground is Lincoln's horse, “Old Bob” (also known as “Old Robin”), wearing a funeral blanket specially made for the event. He is positioned next to African American men, believed to be Reverends Brown and Trevan. Several men and children stand behind them.

Reverend Henry Brown (1823-1906) was born into slavery in Raleigh, North Carolina, and later gained his freedom as an adult in Indiana. He became an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal church in 1846 and participated in the Underground Railroad during the 1840s. He notably took part in the 1853 Illinois Colored Convention, and made Springfield his home in 1855. It was in Springfield that he met Lincoln and began doing odd jobs for the Lincoln family. After the President's assassination, Brown was asked to lead the beloved "Old Bob" in the funeral procession, positioned directly behind the hearse.
