The Collected Library, Including Americana and Early Photography

Lot comprised of a selection of images featuring African American subjects, including the following highlights:

CDV, modern penciled notation on verso "House on Palmyra Bend Miss." Additional faint notation appears to read "Joe ? Overseer's Qts." Uncredited. The image provides an exterior view of a cabin, with a white man standing on the top step of the front porch while two African American women stand on the steps beneath him. A young, African American male subject is visible at lower right, standing beside a horse (print and mount trimmed, toning and light soiling).

[With:] 9 x 7 in. album containing approx. 20 photographs documenting a family's country home and grounds combined with studio portraits presumably showing family members as well as white, female housekeepers, some with inked notations on versos. The album is tentatively identified to the Elting family. Many images with verso imprint reading, "Glimpses through the Camera," with credit to Robert Bracklow, New York. Additional images are credited to F.G. Handel (Orange, NJ). Most notably, the album contains a 3 5/8 x 4 1/2 in. photograph on cardstock mount providing an outdoor view of an aged African American woman seated outside of a residence, surrounded by foliage. An inked notation on verso identifies the woman as "Jane at ? watching her cat, Aug. 22nd, 1888." (Some wear to album exterior; images overall good to very good with occasional toning, soiling, and some fading).

[With:] Cabinet card of an African American woman, likely a domestic worker, posed with two white children outside an apartment. Uncredited. Modern penciled notations on verso identify the children as "Henry and Little Florence," with April 1904 date. -- 4 1/2 x 6 3/4 in. photograph of a Black man standing before a log cabin, period inked notation on verso, "'Uncle Tom' Sexton of Old Pohick Church, Va." Uncredited (toning, spotting, some fading and surface wear to print and mount). -- 3 CDVs/prints after lithographs/engravings, including the "Secession Bubble," "The Colored Volunteer," and an artistic rendering inspired by Uncle Tom's Cabin.
