Note:
Pascale Marthine Tayou is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist whose work explores themes of globalization, identity, and post-colonialism through vibrant, often playful materials. Known for his assemblage-based practice, Tayou weaves together elements of African and Western cultures, highlighting the contradictions and complexities of modern life.
In Poupee Pascale, Tayou constructs a striking figure from crystal, feathers, beads, colored pencils, costume jewelry, twine, and nails. Measuring 21 1/2 inches high, the sculpture evokes a doll-like presence and is both whimsical and totemic. It blurs boundaries between the sacred and the everyday, merging craft, ritual, and consumer detritus into a singular, expressive form. Tayou frequently uses such "puppets" or "fetish figures" as proxies for himself, embedding autobiographical and political commentary into highly textured, sculptural bodies. Poupee Pascale is a vivid example of his ability to infuse found materials with layered meaning, offering both critique and celebration of cultural hybridity.
21 1/2 x 12 x 6 inches.
