Provenance:
Garth's Auctions, 17 October 2020, Lot 24
Note:
Bartolomeo Ambrosini (1588-1657) was a celebrated Italian botanist, physician and naturalist. In addition to publishing and editing works on botany and medicine, he served for over thirty years as Prefect of the Botanical Garden of Bologna. The walls of libraries of elite villas during this period were often lined with portraits of current celebrities such as Bartolomeo Ambrosini. In this composition, Ambrosini holds a piece of paper labeled Roma and possibly with an illegible artist's signature.
The painting with an even network of tight craquelure throughout. A scuff in the paint surface above the sitters thumb. Scattered instances of inpainting visible. Minute flaking to the paint. Examination under UV light reveals that the painting has been re-varnished. There are two circular areas near the lower right and left corners which fluoresce under UV but are not visible to the naked eye. Vanish has yellowed. Dusty; would benefit from cleaning. Additional images are available upon request.
