Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas is relined; passages of the canvas have been pressed due to the lining process; areas of overcleaning scattered throughout; the thick varnish has an uneven appearance, making the background in particular difficult to read; a small area of localized paint losses in the lower center; one small abrasion in the upper center of the background; two liquid stains in the lower left corner. Under UV light: the thick varnish layer has been selectively cleaned around the man's face, hands, and sleeves; an approximately 1 x 1 inch area of inpainting to the man's right cheek; inpainting throughout the majority of the man's wig; an approximately 2 x 1 inch areas of inpainting, along with two smaller areas of inpainting, tin the lower left corner of the background, possibly indicating a past repair; small strokes of inpainting along the man's left hand and within his cravat; additional small areas of inpainting scattered along all edges.
