Provenance:
Jack Poses, New York, 1958-59.
Sotheby's, New York, sale of June 14, 1995, lot 33 (as La Fleur: A Sketch).
Literature:
Antoine Salomon and Guy Cogeval, Vuillard: The Inexhaustible Glance. Critical Catalogue of Paintings and Pastels, vol. II, Paris, 2003, p. 695, no. VII-313.1, (illustrated).
Lot Note:
According to Antoine Salomon, the present work was part of a larger assemblage of images depicting Madame Arthur Fontaine in her salon. Originally, each work had been executed on the same large board.
Framed: 18 x 12 x 2 in.
The painting appears to be in overall good condition. There are two pin holes at the left edge, one approx. 4 in. from the top edge, and one approx. 9 1/2 in. from the top edge. There are series of horizontal creases to the card at the left edge, visible under raking light. These are part of the board itself. The board has been laid down entirely to the panel, without outer edges left bare: as the panel is slightly loose in the frame, we do see those (bare) outer edges, more so up top than at bottom. Residual varnish as seen under UV light. Judging from some of the tarnished pigments, the work would likely benefit from a light cleaning. Additional images available upon request.
