Lot Essay:
A passionate chess enthusiast, Henri Hayden frequently wove references to the game into his paintings. Far more than a leisurely diversion, chess represented a profound intellectual pursuit that resonated with the broader philosophical currents of the time. This connection was particularly pronounced in the early 1950s, a period shaped by his close friendship with writer Samuel Beckett, himself a dedicated player. Their shared interest in chess reflected a mutual preoccupation with strategy, abstraction, and existential tension: ideas that also found meaningful echoes in the life and collecting vision of Sidney Rothberg.
Framed: 32 x 38 x 2 in.
The unlined canvas is overall very good condition. There is a layer of varnish visible under UV light and some pigments florescence, particularly a spot of red paint at the top edge at right (due to the pigment - not a sign of restoration). There are a few stray (and minor) spots of surface soiling, for instance at top left and bottom right. Additional images available upon request.
