A classic ‘Gainsborough’ chair, so called because the artist Gainsborough often painted his subjects seated in chairs like this. This is particular pleasing because it has bold ball and claw feet, combined with carved shells to the knees, a particularly satisfactory piece of design. The other important factor are the beautifully shaped back legs which sweep backwards but none the less are full cabriole shape. The mahogany on the arms is also very well carved. The frame is largely original with replaced rail. Above all the chair is a generous size and extremely comfortable!

In good, stable condition. Old scuffs, marks and scratches throughout consistent with age and use. Having a sun faded finish to legs. The upholstery appears intact without loss or significant staining. The back proper left foot with repaired break, does not detract from overall aesthetic unless viewed closely. Nick Coombs is a senior specialist in the Furniture & Decorative Arts department and also the Coins, Medals & Banknotes department at Freeman's.
Prior to joining Freeman's in 2014, Mr. Coombs worked for PCGS Currency in Peoria, Illinois, where he was responsible for the grading and authentication of paper money. This enabled him to travel to dozens of coin and currency shows a year and develop a lifelong passion for numismatics. In addition to heading the Coins, Medals & Banknotes department at Freeman's, Mr. Coombs works closely with Furniture & Decorative Arts department and has directed auctions for philatelics, memorabilia, scientific instruments, and fountain pens. He received a BA in art history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master of letters in art and art world practice from the University of Glasgow.
