Provenance:
Christie's, London, Fine English Furniture, 6 April 1995, Lot 95
Note from Tim Corfield, antiques advisor to Betty and Gordon Moore at Mountain Meadow:
This magnificent mirror is one of the biggest of its type I have seen. At this early date it was extremely difficult to make large single plates of glass. The frame is beautifully carved with deep carved wood scroll motifs and further decorated with gesso and punch work which is in remarkable condition. The plate certainly looks old and has a nice ‘soft’ bevel, by which I mean you can see the variation in the thickness of the glass where the grinding wheel has cut the bevel at the edge.
In overall good, stable condition. The cornice element detaches for moving. Some restoration to cornice. Cornice with scattered restoration and one area of separation between support elements beneath the flaming-urn on left side. The mirror plate shows age but is likely later. Scattered chipping and flaking to gilt decoration with exposed gesso. the upper right volute on mirror frame reattached. Additional images available upon request.
