Estimate$4,000 – $6,000
Provenance:
Sotheby's London, Important English Furniture, November 19, 1993, Sale 93632, Lot 92
Note from Tim Corfield, antiques advisor to Betty and Gordon Moore at Mountain Meadow:
A royal bed? The catalogue illustration from Sothebys when we bought it in 1993 shows the armorial on the silk covered head board is that of Edward Price of Wales, who later abdicated when he married Wallis Simpson.. The silk hangings are distressed but it would be possible to re-attach the armorial to new hangings.
The posts are magnificent, very large scale and beautifully carved. One assembled it is totally solid. The mattress size is over 6’ square mattress the posts as they are now are 6’10” having been reduced in height, but if you I had the ceilings you could re-attach the original pieces which have been retained to make it 11’9”.
The velvet hangings in need of stabilization prior to use, having a musty odor and very dusty.
The bed disassembles into component parts. Bed height shortened since last sale at Sotheby's to fit in Mountain Meadow. Appears in otherwise good, stable condition. Old scuffs, marks and scratches throughout consistent with age and use. Additional images available upon request.
