Provenance:
Christie's, Ca’n Puig y Castillo de Bendinat, May 24, 1999, Lot 337
Private Collection
Acquired from the above by present owner in 2008
Literature:
L. Feduchi, Estilos del Mueble Español, Barcelona, 1969, fig. 351, p. 252.
Note:
This striking panel originally formed part of a set of six Brussels tapestries depicting mythological scenes, mostly including Diana, set in woodland settings. That spectacular set was part of the collection of the Marques de Bellpuig, Ca’n Puig and hung in their neogothic Castillo de Bendinat, Palma de Mallorca, until the collection was dispersed in an almost 800-lot auction in 1999. Five of the she six panels bore the signature or in some cases the initials of Hendrik II Reydams (d. 1719).
A narrow tapestry panel with identical luxuriant ribbon-tied fruiting foliate borders, once in the collection of Charles Pfizer, is illustrated in G. Delmarcel, Flemish Tapestry, Tiel & London, 1999, p. 314-315.
Professionally conserved. Colors are vibrant. Few instances of separation at seams. Later backed with linen and with Velcro along the top edge for hanging.
