Lot Note:
Ernesto Neto is a Brazilian contemporary artist known for his immersive, sensorial installations that engage viewers through touch, smell, and sight. His works often explore themes of connection, community, and the relationship between the human body and space. Neto draws from organic forms and natural materials, incorporating elements that emphasize the physical and emotional experience of art.
One of his most recognizable techniques involves the use of translucent nylon stockings or fabric, stretched and filled with materials like styrofoam, spices, or sand. These forms, which often resemble drooping, bulbous shapes or suspended sacs, evoke a sense of fragility and bodily presence. The nylon membranes act as a skin-like barrier, emphasizing the tension between containment and release. By using common materials such as styrofoam beads to fill these structures, Neto enhances the tactile and sensory qualities of his work.
His installations frequently invite interaction, encouraging visitors to walk through, touch, or even lie within the environments he creates. Neto’s approach to sculpture is deeply rooted in the traditions of Brazilian Neo-concretism, prioritizing viewer participation and sensory engagement. Through his use of nylon and styrofoam, he challenges conventional boundaries between art, architecture, and the body.

Dimensions are slightly variable given the elasticity of its materials.
There are some areas of stretching at the seam. There are two or three small circular tears in the nylon of the legs and several small scattered pulls in the nylon. There is a small light spot of brown discoloration to top half of sculpture. There is also a dark brown accretion with associated discoloration on other side of the top. Base is slightly yellow/ brown from the annatto. Please note that some very small fleck of annatto tend to fall from nylon base when sculpture is moved. See Specialist photos for details.
