Estimate$2,000 – $3,000
Provenance:
Property of a Philadelphia collection.
Note:
George Owen perfected the technique of piercing leather-hard clay with an oiled knife to create the fine and meticulous "honeycomb" holes, creating a pleasing visual effect imitating ivory works found in India and East Asia during the period. This was a painstaking process, and in some cases a single piece took several months to complete. Given the craftsmanship and delicate nature of these porcelain tablewares, they came at a premium cost to consumers and remain highly prized today.
A nearly identical plate was sold at The Cobbs Auctioneers, Peterborough, New Hampshire, October 12, 2013 as lot 88.
