Note:
By the late 1890s, John Wilbur Chapman was a famous itinerant Presbyterian evangelist, hymn writer and author. A compelling speaker with exceptional organizational skills, Chapman traveled much of America and Europe utilizing a system of urban mass evangelism to maximize religious conversions. The system involved intensive pre-planning: a city to be visited would be divided on a map into up to 30 districts. On the designated day, simultaneous tent meetings would take place in each district. To accomplish this mission, Chapman traveled with a large contingent of preachers, gospel singers, and choirs.
