From an Original Painting by Tisdale in 1800./ Born at Sibble Heddingham Essex in Great Britain 1st of July 1745./ Died at Middletown Middlesex in Connecticut 26th October 1816," graphite and watercolor on paper.

Note:

Samuel Watkinson was a successful English master woolcomber when he, his wife Sarah, and twelve children immigrated to Connecticut in 1795. The family had experienced religious persecution due to their membership in a Dissenter Society supporting the leaders of the French Revolution. The Watkinson children became successful Connecticut business owners and philanthropists.
