Likely acquired directly from the artist, Herbert C. Haseltine, by his first cousin, Charles Henry Marshall III (1891-1952), the second husband of Brooke Russell (married 1932, until Charles' death in 1952, later became Astor).

Aside from being known as a New York socialite, Brooke Astor was hugely charitable, founding the Vincent Astor Foundation with her husband, an organization that supports projects specific to New York City.
