Original brown cloth blind and gilt-stamped (rubbing, soiling, partial split to front hinge). Provenance: Dr. Franklin B. Hough (1822-1885), first chief of the United States Division of Forestry (gift inscription).

FIRST SENATE EDITION. INSCRIBED BY JOHN STRONG NEWBERRY TO DR. FRANKLIN B. HOUGH, "With the kind regards of..." John Strong Newberry was an American physician, paleontologist, and geologist who accompanied the 1857-58 Ives expedition tasked with exploring and mapping the Colorado River by Secretary of War John B. Floyd. Among the members of the Ives expedition was Baron F.W. von Egloffstein, a topographer and artist who pioneered a style of map drawing that relied on shaded reliefs instead of hachures to delineate depth. The expedition was also noteworthy for being the first American expedition to explore the northernmost portion of the Grand Canyon; it was explored in its entirety in 1869 by John Wesley Powell. According to William Goetzmann, Ives's report is "the best by far of these individual reports...It is a long, carefully written journal, consciously literary but with a maximum amount of attention to scientific observation." The present edition was gifted by Newberry to Dr. Franklin B. Hough, first chief of the United States Division of Forestry and considered to be the "father of American forestry."
