Robert Hewson Pruyn was an American lawyer, military officer, diplomat, and politician from Albany, New York. He held several prominent roles throughout his career, including Speaker of the New York State Assembly, Adjutant General of New York, and United States Minister Resident to Japan. He played a significant role in shaping New York’s political and military landscape during the mid-19th century, in addition to representing American interests abroad during a critical period in U.S.-Japan relations.
