Wilson Perkins Foss, Sr. (American 1856-1930), Nyack, New York, with remnants of his collection label #...18. Thence by descent.
Wilson Perkins Foss, Sr., and his son, Wilson Perkins Foss, Jr., were important collectors of Chinese porcelains and works of art. Wilson P. Foss, Sr., built a fortune from explosives, dynamite manufacture, and crushed rock for construction and roadwork. He also served as Haverstraw, New York's first mayor. He built "Under Elms", a 21-room mansion on 37 acres in Upper Nyack, New York, where much of his collection was displayed. Some works previously in Foss Sr.'s collection were sold at Sotheby's, New York, March 19, 1997.
His son, Wilson P. Foss, Jr. attended Yale, where many pieces from his collection were donated (some now deaccessioned, such as the copper-red glazed vase sold at Christie's, New York, September 24, 2021, lot 785), and was later Vice-President of the important New York art dealers Parish-Watson & Co., Inc., assisting several American museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in building their Chinese and Persian Ceramics collections.
