A Japanese Pierced Silver and Enamel Vase, Early 20th Century

The ovoid body rising to an elongated neck flanked by a pair of curved handles, topped with a flared mouth, the main panel decorated with pieced ho-oh birds amongst foliate scrolls and enameled with red, purple, blue and green champlevé, divided by floral blossoms in similar enamels repeated on the neck, the underside bearing a two-character marker's mark on a gilt highlighted panel.

Overall good visual condition, the silver body moderately tarnished, and the enamel with light abrasions. The silver applied chrysanthemums with solder repairs and losses to enamels, vertical gap to central section of neck, behind chrysanthemum; small enamel loss to foliage just below rim on one side, handles with solder repairs at juncture with neck; small enamel flake to face of lion below one eye, small enamel loss to foliage on one foot lobe; a few scattered hairlines to enamels, primarily at neck; old silver polish residue; loss to blue enamel of one petal of central rosette on one side, shallow dent to lower right of lion panel above foot; small horizontal gaps at junctures in neck and shoulder.
