Throughout her lengthy and prolific career, Jane Peterson remained free of dogmatic approaches to art, borrowing from various styles to piece together an aesthetic all her own. With its strong painterly quality, Street Scene is a remarkable example of her idiosyncratic manner. The work depicts a bustling moment captured through the use of two distinct methods. The blocks of bold color and simplified forms composing the lively scene are fiercely expressive, shifting the focus away from representational accuracy, instead distilling the dizzying emotions likely to be felt in the midst of this busy parade of horse-drawn carriages. On the other hand, the fast, broken brushwork that surrounds the ebullient tableau subtly conveys its transience. The painting, like a snapshot, insinuates how light and movement converged at this particular moment in time.
Framed: 31 1/2 x 37 3/4 inches.
Minor deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas is lined; passages of the surface have been pressed due to the lining process; scattered areas of craquelures throughout; one small paint loss in the center right, within the top of the yellow parasol; one pinpoint paint in the lower center; two pinpoint paint losses within the body of the brown horse in the left corner; two pinpoint paint losses in the upper center. Under UV light: small areas of inpainting scattered throughout, with heavier concentrations of inpainting in the corners. Additional images available upon request.
