Estimate$5,000 – $7,000
Provenance:
Bruun Rasmussen, Lyngby, sale of March 9, 2005, lot 1409.
Acquired directly from the above sale by the present owner.
The relined canvas in overall good condition, with a nicely preserved bright palette. Examination under UV light reveals a thick layer of milky green varnish in the foreground, mostly concentrated on the greenery. With very localized areas of inpainting, mostly visible in the upper tier of the composition, namely the sky. See for example at upper left corner, at upper center (along the top outer edge) , upper right corner, as well as at center right (along the right outer edge). The main condition resides in a 'L shaped' tear (about 1 x 2 in.) at center left, in the sky above the rocks. Feathery inpainting also visible in some of the clouds: the higher up at upper left, as well as those aloe the horizon line at center left. The composition itself in the foreground is mostly untouched, save for localized, minor and feathery retouching on the figure blowing the horn: see on his exposed thigh and in between his two legs. Additional images available upon request.
