Lot Note:
After moving to 9 Belsize Park in 1952, where he remained until his death in 1977, Vaughan produced a number of drawings and paintings inspired by the garden below his terrace. The arching branches and dense foliage of this setting became recurring motifs in his work of the early 1950s, notably in Fruit Bearing Tree (1953). Although titled Study for the Garden, this small gouache bears little formal connection to the oil painting Garden executed the same year.
Framed: 14 x 15 x 2 in.
The work was not examined out of the frame, it appears to be in overall good condition. The paper is slightly toned and there appears to be a square shaped stain at the bottom right, perhaps from adhesive on verso. There are a few pinpoint spots of foxing in the unpainted areas, for instance at top left. Additional images available upon request.
