[Philosophy] Descartes, Rene. Les Traitez de l'Homme et de La Formation du Foetus
Amsterdam: Guillaume le Jeune, 1680. First Dutch edition. 4to (201 x 152 mm). Numerous woodcut illustrations in-text. Contemporary full vellum, rubbing, soiling, some ink spots to front cover; some spotting throughout.
L'Homme was begun by Descartes in the 1630s but was abandoned shortly after Galileo was condemned by the Catholic Church for his support of the heliocentrism theory, likely for fear of the same fate befalling him. The second portion, La Formation du Foetus, was begun in 1647 and remained unfinished at the time of Descartes's death three years later. The first French language edition of the text appeared in 1662, translated and edited by Descarte's literary executor Claude Clerselier.
