wax lined on later stretcher; with some scattered cracquelure commensurate with age; with some repairs to horizontal and vertical tears, as revealed under UV light, with a considerable concentration of tears along right-facing side of canvas to right of face, and along chest of figure, as well as a repaired horizontal tear to the left of head; with some scattered areas of retouching, including along perimeter and to background, and with more selective spots of retouching to face and body; the canvas is slightly lifting along upper edge; UV light reveals general green fluorescence, indicative of a later applied varnish; the frame is 19th century, although possibly not original, with some minor occasional losses to gesso and gilding, and wear, commensurate with age
