Note:
William Samuel Patten (1800-1873) was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He graduated from Brown University in 1818 and practiced law for eight years. He served as editor of the Rhode Island American, president of the Common Council of Providence, and as a representative in the Rhode Island General Assembly. His wife, Eliza Bridgham Patten (1799-1882), was the daughter of prominent lawyer, politician, and first mayor of Providence, Samuel Willard Bridgham.
