Lot note:
In early 1891, an exhibition of Brangwyn's watercolors was held at the Royal Arcade Gallery, Bond Street, with the title, From the Scheldt to the Danube. The exhibit was a success, and in March 1891 the artist was commissioned by Larkin's Japanese Gallery to travel to South Africa with fellow artist William Hunt. The pair first traveled to Cape Peninsula, then set out for the vineyards of Stellenbosch and Paarl, the ostrich farms, and the Kimberley diamond fields. Larkin expected them to stay in South Africa for at least a year and tried to halt their return after four or five months, but relented once he saw the oils the artists were working up in London from their sketches. The present painting is typical of Brangwyn's South African series, with its muted palette, square brush technique, and impressionistic style.
Framed: 19 1/2 x 24 3/8 x 2 inches.
Minor deposits of surface dirt and dust; one horizontal hairline crack to the panel extending from the center left edge, approximately 1 3/4 inches in length; otherwise appears in overall stable condition. Under UV light: one small vertical area of inpainting along the upper left edge; additional minor instances of pinpoint inpainting scattered through the sky, as well as several along the edges in the lower foreground.
