Lot note:
Painted in 1840, the present view depicts Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, an island off the northeast coast of England. John Wilson Carmichael created a variety of such scenes, including one that was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852. Here, Carmichael depicts John Strangeways Donaldson Selby leading a boating party at left as they ‘perambulate,’ or inspect and record boundaries and landmarks. While this practice was historically customary in Britain, the artist here infuses the scene with a certain spiritual quality, as evidenced by traces of a rainbow above Selby and his party at left. Carmichael was born in and regularly exhibited at Newcastle. As evidenced by the present work, he was a gifted marine painter who excelled in oils, as well as watercolors, going on to publish The Art of Marine painting in Water-Colours (1859) and The Art of Marine Painting in Oil-Colours (1864).
Framed: 49 1/2 x 71 x 3 inches.
Minor deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas is lined; a network of craquelures throughout the surface, though most are not noticeable except upon close viewing, with some exceptions of more prominent craquelures within the sky; inpainting visible under close viewing along the right and left edges, as well as a few spots in the sky, although these areas are only visible under strong raking light; one pinpoint brown stain in the upper center. Under UV light: strokes and areas of inpainting throughout the sky, some of which are to address craquelures; the aforementioned inpainting along the left and right edges fluoresce, as well as in some scattered areas along the lower edge; small spots of inpainting scattered through the water, with a larger horizontal area of inpainting under the boat in the lower left corner; a few strokes of inpainting within the boat in the lower left corner. Additional images available upon request.
