Lot note:
Born at Versailles as the eldest son of Charles X of France, the Duc d'Angoulême was the last Dauphin of France. After his father abdicated the throne in 1830, he did the same and then exiled himself from France, dying in the Veneto. Kinson was the official portraitist to the Duc d'Angoulême and painted several portraits of him in different versions. The prime, full-length version of the present painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1819 and is now at the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Bordeaux.
Framed: 56 x 45 x 4 inches.
Minor deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas verso is glue-treated and the margins are lined; the surface has scattered instances of raised circular impressions, only visible in raking light; the canvas was recently repaired with professional sutures to address an approximately 6 inch horizontal tear, within the curtain and to the left of the figure; network of craquelures throughout; instances of moderate abrasions scattered along all edges; two thin vertical shallow scratches through the man's neckwear; pinpoint white paint droplets scattered through the center. Under UV light: the aforementioned area of tear repair fluoresces; small strokes of inpainting in a few areas of the man's jacket; one localized area of inpainting to craquelures to the left of the man's shoulder; minor spots of inpainting scattered along the edges within the background.
