Note:
The artist Charles Zellinsky was known for animal paintings and depictions of race horses with their jockeys. A few of his original oil paintings were reproduced as lithographs by Currier & Ives, including his work Celebrated Winning Horses and Jockeys of the American Turf, from which there was also a series of works depicting each horse and rider singly. This portrait is one such example, depicting William Fitzpatrick, known as "Daredevil Fitz," on his horse French Park.
Another painting from the same series, depicting Shelby "Pike" Barnes on Proctor Knott, also dated "1888," was sold at The Sporting Art Auction, Lexington, Kentucky on November 19, 2014 as lot 11.
Painting has not been relined, linen fabric has been added to edges of canvas and tacked to original stretcher. Five small patches to verso. Corresponding retouch to canvas at each patch. Scattered relatively minute retouch throughout. Some craquelure - most notable in sky, and slight stretcher creases. Canvas verso bears stamp of Windsor & Newton London retailed by C. W.. Keenan of Brooklyn, New York.
