Note:

George Poindexter was the second governor of Mississippi (1820-1822), after he served as the state's first House Representative (1817-1819). His second wife, Agatha, served as the state's First Lady, although her tenure was cut short after she died in 1822, following the death of their only child to yellow fever. George would later serve as U.S. Senator from 1830-1835.

portrait of man: lined and stabilized on stretcher, the verso retaining faint signature, now with protective foamboard cover that can be unscrewed, the cover mounted with scanned image showing signature more clearly under UV light, the canvas front with some scattered selective retouching, including to some areas on either side of face, some likely over some minor mended tears, particularly to upper left corner, but retouching also present to face, coat, and some areas to background, the canvas also generally with some green fluorescence indicative of later applied varnish; portrait of lady: mounted to artist board, generally with some scattered cracquelure commensurate with age, with some selective scattered retouching revealed under UV light, including prominent area to upper right corner (likely over a mended horizontal tear), and an area to mended vertical tear along neck area, among some other areas to background; both retaining period frames, with some expected wear and loss to gesso and gilding commensurate with age
