2 volumes, 4to. Numerous color plates and in-text illustrations by Cecil Aldin. (Light foxing to prelims in each volume.) Original quarter drab cloth over drab cloth-covered boards, stamped in brown and in gilt (light scattered rubbing, short tear in upper front hinge of Vol. I).
PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the illustrator on the front pastedown in vol.1 and with an original signed graphite and crayon drawing of Samuel Pickwick by him below same ("To Mr Charles Palmer / Wishing you many happy / returns of the day / Dec 31. 1910"); additionally with an autograph letter, signed by Aldin mounted to front paste-down of second volume: "Wishing you very many happy returns of the day this represents 'The Pickwick Papers' illustrated by one Cecil Aldin".
Charles Herbert Palmer (1861-1937) was the second son of Samuel Palmer and grandson of George Palmer, founder of the Huntley & Palmer biscuit empire. Charles, like his father, became a director of the biscuit company. Charles was close friends with Cecil Aldin and a member and supporter of the South Berks Hunt.
