Oblong 12mo (114 x 152 mm). Engraved vignette on title-page, engraved dedicatory arms on verso, engraved view of the Escorial, 125 engraved maps (7 unnumbered). (A few small stains to title-page and a couple of leaves.) Early 20th century olive sheep gilt, spine in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, top edge stained red (joints splitting, extremities a bit worn). Provenance: Monsieur Ignancourt (contemporary signature on title-page); Raul de Almeida (bookseller's ticket).
ONE OF THE MOST COMPLETE TRAVEL ATLASES BY ABRAHAM ORTELIUS. In 1601, Jan Baptist Vrients acquired the plates for Ortelius' Epitome and subsequently took over the larger plates of his Theatrum. Phillips, Atlases 416; Shirley 231.
