AFTER THE MODEL BY JOHANN JOACHIM KANDLER, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY

in six parts, one figural group modeled to show the Triumph of Amphitrite or Amphitrite velificans, the goddess depicted holding a scepter among cherubs and seated in a shell-form carriage, the other figural group modeled to show Neptune and Thetis in a shell-form chariot lead by hippocampi, each wave-form base modeled to show Tritons, Nereids, dolphins, turtles, shells and coral, each with crossed swords in underglaze blue, impressed and incised numbers to the underside.

Height of tallest 16 7/8 x width of widest 24 inches.

Neptune's anchor and the shell in which he stands have been restored; the shell appears to have been previously broken or cracked in half with a visible seam, and the anchor is missing a section of its rope. One of Neptune's attendant's is missing a finger, and two points of Neptune's crown are missing. One hippocampus's leg has been broken off and repaired. One Triton's tail has chips and a small restoration. Amphitrite's male attendant appears to have restoration with overpainting across the middle of his body. One dolphin's "spit" has been restored, and the water issuing from one dolphin's nostril is missing. Other scattered insignificant small chips to edges of hair or leaves, etc. Attractive and complete overall; each group separates into three sections with dowels to hold the parts in place. Firing cracks visible on the underside. Overall width of Neptune group 24 inches; overall width of Amphitrite group 23 1/2 inches. Additional images available upon request.

Mike Intihar is the Senior Director of Appraisals & Valuations, Midwest at Hindman Appraisals.

Mr. Intihar joined the firm in 1997, and he has expertise in 18th, 19th and early 20th-century Continental, English and American decorative arts and furniture. Mr. Intihar appraises and catalogues approximately 6,000 objects annually for auction and appraisal purposes, and he performs onsite appraisals at various appraisal fairs and events throughout the year. He attends international antique trade shows to assess the global demand for objects handled at auction and retail. Prior to working at Hindman, Mr. Intihar was a senior administrator for Sotheby’s, Chicago, and he began his career at Wolf’s Fine Art Auctioneers in Cleveland, Ohio.
