.54 caliber. 21" barrel. SN: 6529. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock and forend secured by a screw and a single solid, spring-retained brass barrel band. Single shot dropping breech percussion breechloading carbine with L-shaped leaf rear sight, front sight blade, and saddle ring opposite lock. Back action lock marked in two lines STARR ARMS CO/YONKERS, N.Y. Barrel marked STARR ARMS CO YONKERS, N.Y. in a single line between the rear sight and the barrel band. Upper tang marked in two lines STARR'S PATENT/SEPT. 14TH, 1856. H.G.S. sub-inspection mark on left of chamber. No cartouche visible in wood. Some 20,601 were produced circa 1862-1865 with the majority seeing Civil War service with Union Cavalry regiments, including the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas and 24th New York Cavalry. A search of the Springfield Research Service serial number books did not find this carbine, with the closest number found being #6512, which was issued to Company L of the 13th Illinois Cavalry. {ANTIQUE}

Good. Bore good, moderately oxidized with some scattered light pitting and good rifling. Metal with no finish, lightly cleaned a mostly dull pewter patina with some scattered surface oxidation and age discoloration. Markings fairly clear and legible in metal, none in wood. Mechanically functional action. Wood with moderate wear and lightly sanded with a repair at the toe and numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars.

Since 2016 has appeared as a featured appraiser in the field of Arms & Militaria on the popular PBS television series Antiques Roadshow. He is a member of the American Society of Arms Collectors and currently serves on the board of directors of that organization. He is also a member of and formerly served on the board of directors of the Society of American Bayonet Collectors. Tim is a life member of the Ohio Valley Military Society, the Tennessee Military Collectors Association, the Alabama Military Collectors Association, is a member of the Company of Military Historians and is a member of numerous other colleting groups and societies. He is the owner of College Hill Arsenal, a web based antique and collectible arms retail web site, specializing in the American Civil War and related military items. Tim has engaged in the business of buying, selling, researching, and appraising antique and collectible arms and associated military items for some three decades. Since 2016 he has also served as a senior Consulting Specialist in the field of Arms, Armor & Militaria for Cowan’s Auctions, a Freeman's Company.
