Two US Model 1840 NCO Swords with Scabbards

American Civil War

1) US Model 1840 NCO Sword, probably by Ames. 32" single edged spear point blade with 29.5" stopped median fuller. Blade .88" wide at ricasso. Overall length 38.75" with a 6" cast brass hilt. Hilt with dual clamshell guard and knuckle bow and faux wire wrap cast into the grip. Reverse ricassso markings covered by bent counter guard, but appear to be weak Ames markings. Obverse ricasso stamped U.S./AHC/1862 in three lines. "AHC" are the initials of arsenal sub-inspector Archibald H Ceiley, who primarily inspected Ames produced edged weapons during the Civil War. Includes a brass mounted leather scabbard.
2) US Model 1840 NCO Sword by Emerson & Silver. 31.75" single edged spear point blade with 29" stopped median fuller. Blade .88" wide at ricasso. Overall length 38" with a 6" cast brass hilt. Hilt with dual clamshell guard and knuckle bow and faux wire wrap cast into the grip. Reverse ricassso marked EMERSON/&/SILVER/TRENTON/N.J. Obverse ricasso marked U.S./DFM/1863. The initials are those of arsenal sub-inspector Dexter F Mosman. The sword is accompanied by a correct pattern brass mounted blued steel scabbard.

1) Good. Blade with a mottled and moderately oxidized gray patina with scattered discoloration. Markings mostly legible, weak under bent counter guard. Blade tip rounded. Brass with a nice, medium bronze patina. Scabbard fair to good, with moderate finish loss due to crazing and flaking. Leather with several creases and areas of moderate weakness.
2) Very Good. Blade with some cross polish remaining at the ricasso and showing scattered surface oxidation and freckled discoloration along the blade. Markings clear and legible. Brass with an attractive bronze patina. Scabbard a dull bluish-black color with faded traces of blue that has oxidized and shows evenly freckled surface roughness and hazing. Metal with some scattered minor dings and dents.
