US Model 1795 Springfield Musket Dated 1800 on the Buttplate Tang

.70 caliber. 44.675" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, full-length walnut musket stock with three flat, spring retained barrel bands. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket with no rear sight, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band, a socket bayonet lug on top of the barrel, 1.1" from the muzzle, a pair of bell shaped sling swivels and an old replacement ramrod. The 6.375" flat beveled lock has a pronounced teat at the rear and has no discernible markings, but there may be traces of Springfield markings under the pan. It has a removable faceted, fenced and bridled iron pan. The frizzen toe has a rudimentary curl and the frizzen spring terminates in an oval lump with a small projection. The flat beveled cock is reinforced and has a heart shaped cut out with a curl at the top of the cock's comb, a feature eliminated at Springfield circa 1803-1804. The lock appears to be in its original flint configuration. The touchhole is well placed in the pan, is bushed and is currently obstructed. A deeply stamped touch mark is present forward of the touchhole. Endoscopic viewing of the breech did not reveal any welding or indication of reconversion. The breech is stamped with weak proof marks, including a V over {Eagle Head} over P, as well as an indistinct capital letter. The buttplate tang appears to be dated 1800, however the last number is poorly struck and could be a "6", although that is highly unlikely due to the musket's configuration. A weak 39 REGT stamp is present on the reverse of the stock, near the wrist. During the War of 1812, the 39th US Infantry was under the command of Andrew Jackson for some time and was present at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. The barrel band spacing is 10.875" from the rear of the breech to the rear of the lower band, 15" from the rear edge of the lower band to the rear of the middle band, and 13.375" from the rear edge of the middle band to the rear of the upper band. The middle and upper barrel band springs appear to be replacements. The triggerguard plate is nominally 12.75" in length and is of the French pattern. The trigger is of the earliest style and has essentially no reinforcement web, typical of very early US muskets, again a feature that changes substantially starting in about 1801-1802 with the web becoming prominent by about 1803. Early production style short stock with a nominally 12.5" length of pull, 3" narrow wrist and a deeply fluted butt. {ANTIQUE}

Fair to good. Bore is fair, dark, dirty and rusted. Muzzle with some dings and moderate wear, also slightly out of round. Metal is moderately oxidized with a mottled brown over gray patina and some indications of an old cleaning. Metal shows some scattered surface roughness and evenly distributed light to moderate pitting as well, most notably around the breech area. Markings are mostly weak where visible and obliterated on the lock. Mechanically functional lock appears to remain in original flint. Stock with moderate wear and with the forend priced and restored from the middle band forward. Forend with slivered loss along the upper edges. Wood shows numerous scattered bumps, dings, marks, scuffs and mars as well as some drying cracks.
