Elijah Peacock opened Chicago's first watch and jewelry store in 1837. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and under direction of his son, Charles, the business was renamed C.D. Peacock. It continued as one of Chicago's finest watch and jewelry stores. As the oldest Chicago retailer, in 2024 C.D. Peacock opened a large new mansion store in Oakbrook Center, IL.
This Victorian lady's watch pendant dates from the 1880's and is a lovely example of the Victorian "Language of Flowers". With strict etiquette and protocols, the floriography allowed for expression of emotions and sentiments. This watch pendant is decorated with the pansy meaning "I am thinking of you" and the forget-me-not for remembrance. They are both fitting to adorn a watch to note time and hours loved ones may have spent apart.
Overall Condition: The watch winds, sets and runs at the time of cataloguing but has not been timed for accuracy. Acid test indicates the slide charm and chain are 14 karat gold. Scratching and discoloration to the gold consistent with age. Surface wear and some loss of enamel.
