[CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATIONS]. [DISNEY, Walt]. Original layout sketch for Disney's Pinocchio. N.p., n.d. [ca 1940].
Original graphite sketch depicting Geppetto's Workshop from Disney's 1940 animated film, Pinocchio. 10 1/4 x 14 1/4 (image). 12 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. (overall). Image ruled in a red. Hole punches to lower edge, scattered graphite smear, small yellow mark at center, a few small tears around margins. Pencil notation in bottom corner on verso, "JM2 / A400D"
A rich and in-depth sketch detailing the amount of meticulous design required in traditional, hand-drawn animation. As sort of a "world-building" process, graphite illustrations such as this were used to conceptualize story environments, and adapt them to stylistic choices for the animator.
Pinocchio was released by Walt Disney Productions in 1940, the studio's second animated feature film.
