Scott delivered this lecture days before the Terra Nova sailed from London, on June 1st, for Australia, New Zealand, and McMurdo Sound. Scott stayed in England another 6 weeks to raise funds for the expedition before he sailed for Cape Town. Scott discusses the aims of the expedition and the methods he and his men would employ in their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. He concludes: "I am at least confident that if success does not attend our efforts, it will not be because the endeavour of my companions has failed to deserve it."
