In 1767, he explored the Louisiana Territory, traveling up the Mississippi and traversing Texas and Mexico by horse. He sailed with Kerguelen-Tremarac's unsuccessful second voyage in search of Terra Australis Incognita in 1773, and in 1776 he joined a Dutch whaling expedition.
