An Etruscan Terra Cotta Votive Head of a Bearded Man Height 12 1/4 inches.

CIRCA 4TH-3RD CENTURY B.C.E.

depicted with a full beard of comma-shaped locks and short tousled hair across the crown of his head, the large almond-shaped eyes with thick upper and lower lids, the bulging pupils with the irises articulated, a veil pulled up over the back of his head.

Height 12 1/4 inches.

Provenance: Sotheby's New York, Antiquities, June 23, 1989, Lot 162 Note: Votive heads were deposited in sanctuaries and temples as offerings in exchange for divine favor. Collections of such offerings were later buried together within the borders of the sacred precinct. Some of the finer examples, such as the present lot, exhibit meticulous hand-worked detailing, while many were simply mold-made.

Repaired from two large fragments, broken horizontally across the center, above the eye lids, above the proper right ear and through the proper left ear. The break peaking at the back of the head. All with minor fill. A vertical crack with some fill along his neck to the proper right of his chin. A short horizontal crack from the proper left side along the veil, approximately 2 ½ inches from the top. Surface wear, abrasions and minor losses throughout. The bottom edge rough.
