(Map of United States with a few short splits to folds, map of Maine edges slightly fraying and soiled and with 3 1/2-in tear with old repair on verso, some light browning or spotting as usual.) Contemporary mottled calf, red morocco lettering-piece gilt, smooth spine gilt (joints splitting, vertical split to spine, spine ends chipping, some overall light wear). FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST GAZETTEER OF THE UNITED STATES. Scott drew and engraved the maps, which depict the United States, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, the Northwest and Southwest Territories, Vermont, and Virginia.
