Contemporary green levant gilt, upper cover with central morocco onlay design depicting a witch riding a broom, spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands gilt, turn-ins gilt, edges gilt, STAMP-SIGNED BY BAYNTUN RIVIERE (spine sunned); cloth slipcase. Provenance: Eugene Field (1850-1895) American writer (signature, bookplate); Eugene Grosman (bookplate); "S. L. Clemens" (signature in pen with a note in another hand in pencil: "this is a forgery J.S. Laurence, Books"). EUGENE FIELD'S COPY, SIGNED BY HIM on first blank: "Eugene Field Chicago. Sept 14, 1895." Field, known for his light-hearted children's poems, died from a heart attack in November of 1895. He wrote for the Chicago Daily News and lived in the neighborhood now known as Buena Park.
