Kemble, a British actress, married Pierce Mease Butler, a plantation owner in Georgia; they lived on his plantations in the winters of 1838 and 1839. Kemble kept a diary of her observations, which was passed around abolitionist circles prior to its 1863 publication during the Civil War. Howes K-70.
