Delighted by the marriage of his sister to a member of one of Europe's oldest families, the Emperor Napoleon reputedly gave the young couple an extensive silver-gilt table service, of which this lot was a part. The service dates from 1804-1814, but Pauline ordered additional additional pieces circa 1817 from Rome's Paolo Spagna. The service was sold with the contents of the Borghese Palace in Rome in 1892 and later acquired by Mrs. Edith Rockefeller McCormick, who lent it to the Art Institute of Chicago until her death. It was then divided into lots and sold at auction, many of the lots finding their way into American museums and private collections. In overall good condition. Light to moderate surface scratching throughout consitent with polishing and use. Some areas of rubbing to gilt decoration on underside of some spoons. Some fork tines bent slightly, if at all, out of alignment. One spoon with 1/4 inch circular indent to bowl. Knives with likely erased engraving on handle. Case with age similar to service, uncertain if original to service or associated.
