in two parts, the upper section having a molded cornice above three aligned drawers and four graduated drawers, the lower section with an arrangement of four drawers and a carved shell centering the apron, raised on cabriole legs.

Property from the Estate of Roger Curry, Bloomington, Indiana Provenance: Roger Curry inherited the highboy from his grandparents, Joseph and Harriet Coe, of Durham, New Hampshire. It descended to the Coes from their relative, Mary Pickering Burt, who married Federal C. Burt (1789-1828), a minister of Durham. A handwritten note affixed to the inside of one drawer indicates that the highboy was probably a part of Mary's wedding furniture at the time of her marriage. Federal Burt was probably a descendant of David Burt (1629-1690), an early settler of Northampton, Massachusetts who had many children. The Pickering and Coe families were joined when Joseph Coe (1782-1852) married Temperance Pickering (1788-1864). Both the Coe and Pickering families were prominent in the early days of Durham. The note in one drawer also indicates that the upper section and lower section were separated for many years, and that the top of the upper section was replaced when the two were reunited. The adjacent photograph shows the highboy in situ at the home of Joseph and Harriet Coe, circa 1900.

The upper section and lower section appear to be a marriage with mismatched brasses; the top board of the upper section has been replaced. Sides with a few age cracks; two drawer corners with chip/losses. Pendant finials missing. Lower section's long drawer having a false lock plate. Old scuffs, marks and scratches throughout.
