Bears a label on the verso suggesting an attribution to Hans Eworth (Flemish, 1540-1574).
The present portrait bears the inscription, Soli Deo Honor Et Gloria, the motto of the Huddleston family, a family of personal soldiers for Queen Mary I of England. Edmund Huddleston of Sawston in Cambridgeshire succeeded his father, Sir John, in 1557, and became a ‘schismatic’, or partial conformer under Elizabeth I’s Protestant rule, while his son, Henry harboured the Jesuit John Gerard at Sawston in 1594.

In overall fair condition. Craquelure commensurate with age present throughout the work. At upper right and to left of figure area of paint peeling away from board. Soiling present across figures face, primarily concentrated on right side, visible under raking light and UV. Small apparent loss present on figures chin. Please see specialist photos for details
