Warmly inscribed by Nicholson to English humorist E.V. Lucas (1868-1938).
William Nicholson's son Andrew discusses this print in his William Nicholson, Painter (1996), "The Queen Empress had invariably been presented with every device of pomp and panoply that could conceal...the fact that Victoria of Great Britain and India was a dumpy little old woman...It was William who first had the temerity to present this unheroic old figure just as it was; an animated tea-cosy, walking an Aberdeen in the gardens of Kensington Palace... When Whistler congratulated William on his woodcut of Queen Victoria, William said: 'But she was such a good subject.' To which Whistler replied: 'She might well have said the same about you.'" Work has been laid down to larger mat board. Work is in overall good condition. Soiling and toning to mat board present throughout, most notable at lower right corner. Small pin sized holes present in mat board at lower right. Additional images available upon request.
