An Egyptian Painted Wood Sarcophagus Fragment with Imset

Late Period, 26th-30th Dynasty, 664-343 B.C.

Width 14 inches (35.56 cm).

Provenance:

Dr Ulrich Muller, Zurich, Switzerland, acquired 1968-1978.

Sands of Time, Washington D.C. [Inv. no. EW576]

Donald Wonder (1938-2023), New Jersey, where acquired from the above, 3 November 2006; thence by descent.

This polychrome fragment is adorned with four distinct registers. On the far right, it depicts Imset, one of the Four Sons of Horus. To the left, three columns of hieroglyphic inscriptions unfold. These inscriptions are funerary, featuring the phrases: "Words spoken by Osiris," "the songstress of Amun," and "Imsety."

Inspected under UV light and 10x loupe. Areas of encrustation, particularly along central top. Areas of loss and severe weathering to pigment. Board is warped with some age slits not affecting overall stability. Overall in fine and attractive condition. See additional images.

Mr. Coley joined the Antiquities department in 2021 after working as Managing Director in the Ancient Art department at Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery, where he helped to establish the Ancient Art department and launched Colnaghi New York in 2017. Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
